How We Choose Our Products

We're committed to making sure the products featured in ShopGreen are low-impact and environmentally-friendly. The products we display fall into at least one of the following categories.

Energy-efficient products

The average UK household spends £445 on energy each year . 50% more than an energy-efficient home. By shopping for Energy Star-compliant electronics and appliances with an Energy Label score of B or higher, you can potentially save a lot on your monthly energy bill...and save the environment at the same time.

Products made from organic or recycled materials

Today, the UK recycles approximately 31 percent of its household waste, with a goal of growing that number to 40 percent by 2010. By purchasing products made from organic and recycled materials, you help slow the growth of landfills by lessening the amount of solid waste you put out every year.

Organic & sustainable products such as these allow you to leave less of an environmental footprint, while treating your body better.

Biodegradable products and compost bins

By buying biodegradable products and using a compost bin, you can literally see the impact you're making by not taking that waste away. Compost increases soil fertility, so you can use it to reduce your use of chemical fertilizers.

Products that meet Fairtrade standards

The Fairtrade Mark appears on products as a guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world have received a fair price for their products. Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products also receive an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects.

Products with low usage of natural resources including LED light bulbs, low flow showerheads/toilets, solar power, and cloth diapers

Sometimes advances in technology have allowed us to find ways to use less resources, and other times, we had it right to begin with. Using cloth diapers, for instance, will dramatically decrease your natural resource consumption.

Many companies have a great track record of creating environmentally-sound products, and we salute them for that. Their inclusion in ShopGreen is based on a clean environmental record, in which they demonstrate their commitment to minimizing ecological impact.
